Tahoe yellow cress (Rorippa subumbellata), or TYC, is a small perennial plant that grows on the shoreline of Lake Tahoe and no where else in the world. It lives only on the sandy beaches and dunes at the ever-changing margin of the lake. The plant grows very low to the ground in small clusters that may spread across the sand. TYC is a member of the mustard family (Brassicaceae) and has tiny yellow flowers with four petals.
don't be fooled
A common yellowcress is also found on the shores of Lake Tahoe. The western yellowcress (Rorippa curvisiliqua), also called curvepod yellowcress, can grow in the same habitat as TYC. Unlike TYC, which is restricted to Lake Tahoe, the western yellowcress may be found in many different habitats including forest, grassland, and wetlands throughout western North America.
